Praseodymium

Neodymium’s inseparable twin — one half of the NdPr magnet franchise.

Praseodymium is rarely discussed apart from neodymium: the two are chemically similar, costly to separate, and usually sold together as NdPr oxide for permanent magnets. Praseodymium substitutes for a portion of neodymium in NdFeB magnets without degrading performance, effectively stretching magnet supply. On its own it colors glass and ceramics a distinctive yellow-green, hardens magnesium alloys for aircraft engines, and appears in aviation-grade alloys and fiber-optic amplifiers.

Key Applications

  • NdFeB permanent magnets (as NdPr oxide) for EVs and wind turbines
  • Yellow-green pigments in glass and ceramics
  • High-strength magnesium alloys for aerospace
  • Didymium glass for welding goggles
